Hina Dolls Infused with a Century of Craft — The Art of Washi Backing

Katsurahina’s hina dolls feature a unique process in which washi paper is applied to the reverse side of the garments.

Washi, carefully cut to fit each part—such as the sleeves and body—is applied in a layered, pouch-like structure. This creates breathability within the garments, allowing the hina dolls to “breathe.”

This technique has been passed down for over a century, and is a distinctive tradition unique to Katsurahina.By incorporating washi as a lining, it helps maintain the form of the garments, provides protection against insects, and regulates humidity—creating an ideal environment for hina dolls, especially when stored in boxes during the humid summer months.

Over time, the washi gently enhances the natural flow of the garments, allowing the dolls to develop a more supple and refined appearance with age.In this sense, they are not complete at the moment they reach you—they continue to evolve, gradually approaching completion over time.

Katsurahina’s hina dolls are born from techniques and materials preserved for over a hundred years, brought to life through the hands of artisans. We hope you will experience their profound beauty and lasting value in your own space.
