Kasane Frame is a completely new concept of interior wall art,
created using the “materials” and “techniques” of hina doll making.

Kasane Frame — A form of art that displays culture

As a hina doll artisan, I have spent many years engaging with Japanese traditional culture.
The origin of my path lies in a deep fascination with “color” and “pattern” in Japan.

For Japanese people, color and pattern are not merely decorative elements.
They carry a power like “words,” reflecting the seasons, nature, and the human heart—
imbued with a delicate aesthetic sensibility cultivated over long periods of time.

Among these, what captivated me most was Kasane no Irome—the layered color combinations found in the court garments of the Heian period.
The subtle differences in layered colors express the changing seasons, elegance, and emotion with remarkable richness,
and this cultural expression deeply moved me.

From this inspiration came a desire to convey the beauty of Japanese color
in a form that can be displayed and integrated into contemporary spaces.
This is how the interior wall art “Kasane Frame” was born.

More than simply adding color to a space,
I hope these works can gently deliver the quiet strength of Japanese culture
to the hearts of those who encounter them.

What does “Kasane” in Kasane Frame mean?

Kasane — The Art of Layering Color

襲の色目

The use of color in the junihitoe,
as seen in the court costume culture of the Heian period

Kasane = 襲 (Kasane)

“Kasane,” as seen in the costume culture of the Heian period,
is a uniquely Japanese color tradition that expresses the seasons and human emotions through layered colors.

Each combination carries its own meaning and name,
and the delicate gradations of overlapping colors are described as “nioi” (fragrance),
cherished as a form of transient beauty.

The “4C” Concept

4C: Color・Culture・Craft・Collaboration

Color — A delicate and profound sense of color cultivated by the Japanese people.

Culture — Meaningful colors and patterns, including Kasane no Irome seen in the costume culture of the Heian period.

Craft — Rooted in the techniques of hina doll artisans, utilizing traditional craft materials and handwork.

Collaboration — Working together with artisans across Japan, including washi paper, textiles, dyeing, and kiri wood.

The concept of Kasane Frame is defined by the Four Cs: Color, Culture, Craft, and Collaboration.
These form the essential characteristics of each work.

Elements that Shape Kasane Frame

Kasane Frame is created by directly applying the techniques and material selection cultivated through hina doll making.
From the selection of textiles and the layering of fabrics to the composition of color,
every aspect is guided by the artisan’s eye and hand.

Each piece carries the same aesthetic world as hina dolls,
while quietly adding color and depth to contemporary spaces.

Within stillness, there is a presence that quietly captures the heart.
Kasane Frame is an interior art that embodies Japanese color culture and the handcraft of traditional artisans,
bringing a sense of dignity and narrative into a space.

In a ryokan room that reflects the essence of Japanese aesthetics.
In the living room of a modern residence, or in spaces of hospitality.
Simply by being there, it introduces a quiet sense of space and refined beauty into the atmosphere.

Choose to “display culture” in your everyday life.
