With the arrival of spring, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to all who celebrate Hinamatsuri (Girls’ Day).
This year as well, we have been blessed with many meaningful connections through the exhibition and presentation of hina dolls. We would like to express our sincere gratitude.
Among the many conversations we have had, there is one question we are often asked:“Why do we display hina dolls?”Today, we would like to share our thoughts, humbly, from our own perspective.
Hina dolls are a living expression of courtly costume culture, nurtured over Japan’s long history and passed down to the present day. They are not only part of a seasonal tradition, but also a valuable opportunity to encounter Japan’s unique aesthetic sensibilities—its culture of color and pattern.
To engage with such culture, rooted in the land, quietly nurtures a child’s sensitivity. And we believe that sensitivity, in time, leads to creativity.
To display hina dolls is not only to wish for a child’s physical well-being,but also to support the cultivation of a rich inner life—perhaps it is an act that holds such meaning.
The fact that a culture which cherishes unseen sensitivity has endured to this day speaks to its enduring value.
At Katsurahina, we regard the culture of Hinamatsuri, along with Japan’s traditions of color and pattern, as something deeply meaningful. We continue to create our works while honoring and carrying these traditions forward.
When delivering each piece, we include a message that conveys the meaning and background behind the work, together with the words of the artisan. What resides there is the timeless prayer of families, unchanged across generations.
Even in today’s increasingly globalized world, the ability to quietly express one’s own culture is an irreplaceable asset. If our work may serve, even in a small way, to support this, it would be our greatest honor.
We will continue to pursue timeless beauty, carefully cultivating the classical traditions of color and pattern. We sincerely appreciate your continued support.
